Plenty of people assume a home battery only makes sense if solar panels are already on the roof. That is understandable. Solar and batteries are often sold together, and the cleanest mental picture is simple: panels fill the battery by day, the battery powers the house at night.
But a battery without solar is not useless. It is just solving a different problem.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, monthly electricity consumption per U.S. residential customer averaged 861 kWh in 2023. A home battery will not erase that whole bill by itself. What it can do is store grid power for backup, shift some usage away from expensive hours, and keep selected circuits running when the utility goes down.
The case for storage-only backup
A storage-only setup charges from the grid when power is available. During an outage, it feeds a backed-up load panel or, in some designs, selected whole-home circuits. The value is mostly resilience.

Time-of-use pricing charges different electricity rates at different hours. If power is cheap overnight and expensive in the evening, a battery can charge during lower-cost periods and discharge when rates rise.
That sounds easy, but the payback is local. Some utility plans have a big spread between off-peak and peak prices. Others do not. Some add demand charges or export rules. A homeowner needs the actual tariff, not a guess.

What storage-only buyers should check first

- How many outages happened in the past two years?
- Which circuits must stay on?
- Does the utility offer time-of-use pricing?
- Is solar likely in the next few years?
- Will the electrical panel need upgrades?
The last question is easy to overlook. Backup power is not only a battery decision. It is also a panel, transfer switch, inverter, and permitting decision.
Leave a path for solar
A storage-only battery can be a first step rather than the final system. If solar is planned later, the inverter and battery architecture should be chosen with that in mind. Otherwise, the homeowner may pay twice for equipment that could have been planned once.
